Eversheds Sutherland funding helps open doors for families and young people to experience wetlands

WWT, the wetland charity, has received a generous grant from its long term partner Eversheds Sutherland’s Charitable Trust, to supplement transport costs and support engagement for two flagship programmes: Generation Wild and Blue Influencers.

The funding will tackle one of the biggest barriers to nature - access - by helping schools and youth groups cover transport costs to and from WWT wetland centres.

The Children’s People and Nature Survey for England (2024) found that 13% of children and young people never go on a school trip to natural places. Furthermore, 27% of children from households with an income below £15,000 are more likely to miss out on nature trips, compared to those from higher-income households.

Mark Stead, Head of Learning at WWT explained:

For many children, nature feels distant - something seen on screens but rarely touched. This grant helps us change that. It means muddy boots, laughter on the trail, and families discovering the magic of wetlands together. It’s about showing that nature isn’t exclusive - it belongs to everyone.

Thanks to Eversheds Sutherland’s support, WWT is helping young people unlock the superpowers of wetlands and giving families the tools to keep that connection alive.

From 5th January, Primary schools involved in the Generation Wild programme can apply for coach travel grants to bring families to their nearest wetland centre, where children can guide their loved ones through joyful nature activities. Teachers can also apply for small grants to host parent sessions at school, helping families build confidence to explore nature at home.

Meanwhile, from 5th January Blue Influencer groups, WWT’s youth social action programme for 10–14-year-olds in London, can apply for travel support to visit WWT London Wetland Centre. A guided tour will spark ideas for community-led projects that highlight how wetlands benefit both wildlife and people.

Keith Froud, International Chief Executive, Eversheds Sutherland, explained:

At Eversheds Sutherland, we’re proud to support WWT in making nature more accessible for all. This funding helps families experience the joy of wetlands through Generation Wild, and empowers young people in London to become environmental changemakers through the Blue Influencer programme. It’s about removing barriers, whether physical or social, and opening up opportunities for connection, learning, and action.
