Wildlife expert Paul Stevens lead series of walks this summer
Former Reserve Manager Paul Stevens is leading a series of walks as part of the Dragonfly Festival at WWT Arundel this summer
WWT Arundel Wetland Centre is welcoming back former Reserve Manager and renowned wildlife photographer Paul Stevens to lead a special series of guided dragonfly walks this August, as part of the centre’s annual Dragonfly Festival (23 July – 31 August 2026).
Blending his passion for photography with extensive knowledge of the site’s wetlands, Paul will offer visitors a unique insight into the world of dragonflies, with tailored experiences for both adults and families.
Paul photographed the common club-tailed dragonfly at WWT Arundel for the first time in 2014, marking a significant moment for the site. Reflecting on his approach to wildlife photography, he said:
“It doesn’t matter what camera you’ve got – for me, the key is to put that camera in the right position. Sometimes you get really lucky, or you have to work at your field craft.”

Exclusive photography walks for adults
For adults interested in photography, Paul is leading a 45-minute guided walk along pathways usually reserved for WWT wardens. During the walk, he will help identify dragonflies and damselflies, as well as any other wildlife you may encounter. As the former primary wildlife photographer at WWT Arundel, Paul will also share valuable photography tips developed over many years.
These exclusive adult walks take place on 6, 12, 21 and 27 August. Tickets cost £5 per person (plus normal admission, which is free for WWT members) and must be booked in advance via our website. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore areas typically closed to the public and enhance your wildlife photography skills. Book here.
Family-friendly discovery walks
For families, Paul will lead relaxed walks to dragonfly habitats along the main pathways at WWT Arundel. While sightings can’t be guaranteed, Paul will share expert tips to maximise your chances of spotting dragonflies—both at the centre and elsewhere in Sussex during summer. His enthusiasm for sharing a love of wildlife with people of all ages makes these walks a memorable experience.
Family walks also run on 6, 12, 21 and 27 August. These free sessions can be booked on the day at the Dragonfly Festival Hub in the centre. Find out more here.
A legacy of conservation at Arundel
Paul Stevens served as Reserve Manager at WWT Arundel Wetland Centre from 2009 to 2020, managing the site’s wild areas to enhance wetland habitats for plants, birds and dragonflies. During his tenure, he oversaw the creation of the Sand Martin hide, refurbishment of the wet grasslands, development of the Arun Riverlife lagoon, and the reinstatement of the rare triangular club-rush.
Paul continues his practical conservation work today as Hirundine Champion for the Sussex Ornithological Society and as a conservation officer for House Martin Conservation UK & Ireland. He also runs an ecology business, handcrafting and supplying house martin nest cups across the UK, including work with the Greening Arundel Group on their “Bring Back Birds” initiative. Paul remains closely connected to WWT Arundel as a volunteer with the reserve team.
