Escape the Heat: Discover the Cool Calm of WWT Llanelli's Wetlands
Swap crowded beaches for shady paths, sparkling ponds, and wildlife wonders. Discover why WWT Llanelli is the perfect place to chill out this summer.

While the UK swelters under soaring temperatures and beaches heave with sunburnt crowds, there’s a cooler, calmer alternative waiting for you just off the beaten path. At WWT Llanelli, wetland nature offers the perfect antidote to the heat – a refreshing retreat where water, wildlife, and whispering reeds work their magic.
Chill Out Naturally
Step into a world where the air feels fresher, the breeze dances through willow trees, and the only sounds are the gentle rustle of reeds, splashing wildlife, and glorious birdsong. Our shaded paths, lush wildflower meadows, and sparkling ponds offer a natural escape from the heat – no grumpy queues or sticky seats in sight!
Take in the sweeping views across tranquil lagoons and the shimmering estuary towards The Gower. It’s not just beautiful – it’s blissfully cooler than most places.

There are also reduced price tickets available for anyone who is in receipt of Universal Credit and Pension Credit. These tickets must be pre-booked up to one day before your visit day and are only available online.
Wildlife on the Wing
As you wander, look up – swallows and sand martins swoop and skim across the water, feasting on insects and putting on an aerial show. Pause in one of our shaded hides with a cold drink or ice cream and let the serenity wash over you. You never know what wetland wonders you might spot.

Dazzling Dragonflies and Delicate Damselflies
Summer at WWT Llanelli isn’t just about cooling off – it’s also peak season for spotting some of our most dazzling wetland residents. With 22 species of dragonflies and damselflies recorded on site, the reserve becomes a buzzing, shimmering haven for these aerial acrobats. Watch them dart and hover over ponds and reedbeds, their jewel-like colours flashing in the sunlight.
To celebrate these incredible insects, we’re hosting our Dragonfly Festival all summer – a chance to learn more about their fascinating lives, join guided walks, and take part in family-friendly activities.
Relief
Visitor Becky told us:
“I've felt trapped in this hot weather at home. Coming here has been so peaceful and refreshing. There are so many great areas to catch the breeze and enjoy the shade. Just being away from people and noise has helped, to be honest. Watching the ducks preening and splashing has been wonderful. I'm feeling so much better now!”
Cool Adventures for All Ages
There’s plenty of space for adventure too, with exciting outdoor play areas and activities that bring families closer to nature.
WWT Llanelli’s Learning Manager, Sarah Mitchell, says:
“What better place to be in this hot weather than by the tranquil waters of our wetland reserve? As well as shady walks, we’ve got a fantastic canoe safari – imagine paddling gently between the reeds, trailing your hands in the water as you enjoy the peaceful scenery and wetland wildlife.”
And for the little ones? Let them burn off energy in the Explore play area, surrounded by reeds and trees, or build a den together in the cool shade of Wiggly Wood.
