Flocking Greylags,
Greylags,
This is the time of year for peak counts of Greylags. Well over 500 birds are around the site at the moment. These are mostly local breeders that have recently moulted and are now gathering in large numbers. It seems to have been a good breeding season and its exciting to watch interactions between the big family groups. Greylags are often spoken of in the same way as Canada Geese but they are of course a native species that would have bred in this area before they were driven out by hunting. Whilst the continental birds are highly migratory British birds have probably always been rather more sedentary.
