Today's sightings
Please note that South Finger will be shut for a period this morning for safety reasons, hedge cutting is in operation, this will be followed by some reedbed management work with the excavator. Extra pipes are being installed to make the filter system work efficiently along with some de-silting.
Work is also continuing in the Rushy Pen, we are removing the shingle from one of the islands and replacing it, the island will also be made more wader friendly. We will also repair a leak from top lake to the lower scrape. We are against the clock now as the Bewick's Swans and other wildfowl may be arriving by late October
This week the excavator will move to the Top New Piece to create some new islands on the scrape/marsh. The birds usually feed/roost at the opposite end of where the work is carried out. We have tied in with low tides as it is quieter here during that time. Sorry for any disturbance to your day, it is a busy time of year as we carry out maintenance and improvements for wildlife and the enjoyment of them in future.
South Lake
Black Tern- juvenile is still showing well from the Discovery Hide as it feeds over the main lake. Both Great Crested and Little Grebe are also on the main lake. The usual large flock of Greylag Geese come and go from the fields to the lake for a drink and wash. On the wader scrape a flock of 248 Teal contains one juvenile Garganey, it was favouring the area on the W side under the bank to roost. Only 44 Black-tailed Godwit and 90 Lapwing were feeding on the mud, low tides this week have meant it is a little quieter for waders on the scrape.
