Today's sightings
Kingfisher Hide
The Kingfisher pair were present again, the male was busy digging out the hole. Out on the field and marsh were 10+ Lapwing, 2 Redshank, 20 Teal and 2 Snipe.
Migrants
It is apparent that new waves of migrants are moving through, we have at least 40 Chiffchaff and four Willow Warbler today. These very similar phylloscopus warblers can be found feeding or singing in the low scrub, reed bed fringes and hedges favouring the flowering willows as they attract insects. In addition we have 20+ Meadow Pipit which are part of a migrant flock, the breeding birds are already on territory. Yesterday saw a mass arrival of early migrants across the country. A Red Kite went through N at c11.00am.
Holden Tower
Lapwing 20+ on territory on the Dumbles performing display flights and nest scraping. 18 Avocets present on the scrape with a pair of Wigeon or two. 30 Greylag Geese dotted about the grassy areas. Little Grebe, Teal and Gadwall on the pool to the East of the hide.
Tack Piece
Two pairs of Pintail, 20 Teal and a few other duck species on the scrape.
Decoy (Gulf Hide)
Little Grebe, pair of Pochard, 15 Tufted Duck, 12 Shelduck and 9 Mallard on the Decoy Pool.
South Lake
At least four second-summer Mediterranean Gulls among the 120 Black-headed Gulls, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 5 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Avocet present early morning. A variety of duck species present along with Canada and Greylag Geese and Coot and Moorhen.
Zeiss Hide
7 Lapwing and 31 Avocet (at least 51 on site today), 40 Teal on the flood.
