Spring Landrover safari

In less than ideal conditions nine of us rode out onto the reserve through the rain and wind passing groups of Shelduck on the fields. These birds are hanging around readying themselves to nest. First stop was at the 100 Acre where Skylark and Lapwing displayed undeterred. Redshank were more subdued. A Brown Hare showed well in the marshes.A walk into the reedbeds produced a couple of Sand Martins, Reed Buntings, 2 singing Cetti's Warbler, 2 Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaff, 2 Blackcap and a pair of Pochard. Little Grebe were heard and the Cormorants looked settled on the platforms. Highlight was a scarce Water Shrew that gave great views under the tin. Moving to the foreshore the wild waves were impressive on the estuary, at least 4 Wheatear and 30 Meadow Pipit were seen plus a Peregrine. A White Wagtail flew over and Shelduck and Curlew fed on the mudflats. We transferred to the South Lake and saw Ruff and 5 Redshank plus the Avocet pair copulating.
