Curlew Sandpipers

Three juvenile Curlew Sandpiper were on the river this morning with a small flock of other small waders made up of Dunlin and Ringed Plover.

Robbie Garnett Hide
At least 2 Whinchat were balancing on the thistle-heads on Tack Piece.

Zeiss Hide
A Garganey was sleeping on one of the islands with a group of Teal and Gadwall - others may be present but tucked up out of sight. Also present were 2 Ruff including a juvenile, 6 Redshank, 200+ Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Grey Heron, a juvenile Little Grebe, a Kingfisher and 4 Greenshank. Duck numbers are slowly increasing for the winter with 6 Wigeon, a drake Pochard and 10 Pintail counted.

Rushy Hide
Just 4 Shoveler were on the lower pond this morning along with 3 Green Sandpiper, 5 Snipe, 28 Gadwall and 2 Black-tailed Godwit.

Middle Point / Summer Walkway
Three juvenile Curlew Sandpiper were with around 40 Dunlin and 100 Ringed Plover on the river this morning. A Great White Egret with 8 Little Egret was on the Royal Drift (south of the reserve) with the Great White Egret (or a second bird) later being seen from the Van de Bovenkamp Hide. Middle Point also held 2 Common Sandpiper, a Wheatear and the Spoonbill was seen on the river. A few Yellow Wagtail were also on the Dumbles and the river along with 280+ Curlew and 5 Sanderling. Along the Summer Walkway hedge were a Redstart (possibly 2), a Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Kestrel and 2 Whitethroat.
