Look out for the Bittern

The Bittern has been showing well again at the Zeiss Hide today

The Bittern has been showing well again at the Zeiss Hide today. Two Spoonbills have also been present here along with a selection of ducks and waders.

Zeiss Hide
The high tide roost produced at least six Little Stint, two Curlew Sandpiper, three Sanderling, 170 Dunlin, 91 Ringed Plover, three Ruff, two Greenshank and two Spotted Redshank. Also noted were eight Snipe. Many visitors also had great views of the Bittern walking on the edge of the reedbed. Earlier this morning a Spoonbill dropped in before the tide had come in, and a second bird was later seen and joined it here. Two adult and two juvenile Little Grebe are in the open water near the Van de Bovenkamp Hide.

Estuary Tower
Several Cranes were on the Dumbles and out on the estuary first things, including the family of four. A Great Egret was roosting on the Long Ground Pool.

Rushy Hide
Counts this morning included the Spotted Redshank, five Greenshank, 91 Black-tailed Godwit, two Snipe, three Green Sandpiper, an Avocet, 14 Redshank, 13 Ruff and 106 Teal.

South Lake
As we struggle with water the scrape is drying out but the muddy areas still held 18 Ruff this morning. Three drake Pochard were amongst the Tufted Duck on the deep lake.

Middle Point
One of the Spoonbill flew past this morning and landed on the Top New Piece, viewed from the Zeiss Hide before a second bird was then seen. A small flock of waders were to the north, and a Whinchat was on the fence to the north of the Shepherd's Hut along the seawall. Several Reed Bunting and Reed Warbler were in the reedbed.
