Willow Emerald Damselfly- a new breeding species for the reserve

Willow Emerald Damselfly has joined other 'southern' species in range expansion, they have rapidly spread across the UK in recent years. Our first record came two years ago, we suspected them of breeding in or around the Decoy but didn't find any signs over the winter, at least not in the trees we were coppicing, all were carefully checked prior to any work proceeding. With a few sightings again this summer from late July, particularly along the Decoy ditch, further searches revealed a breeding site in the old pollards. This site is not in a public area, but to celebrate our Dragonfly festival we would be happy to offer some walks for members or visitors to view them if the demand is there. Keep an eye on this page for any further updates. The coming week is due to be hot and sunny so there is a good chance of sightings.

On Sunday 10 August, whilst checking and adjusting water levels, another individual was discovered at the South Finger extension, this is again in a private area but demonstrates that this species is finding all suitable habitat on the reserve. We don't think it will be long before this insect is recorded across the whole reserve. The best public areas with paths and boardwalks are around the Decoy but the canoe trail is perfect for this species, surely they must be out there, hire a canoe and see what you can find!

This is the 27th species of odonota to be recorded on the WWT Slimbridge reserve, it's likely that we now have 20 breeding species present.

On the 14th and 16th of August we are pleased to provide a couple of walks for those interested in spotting a Willow Emerald Damselfly (or two).

Start times are as follows: 14th of August at 13:30 and the 16th of August at 14:00
