Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Bird News

Lots of wildfowl around today, with over 20,000 Pink-footed Geese roosting on the reserve last night, and increased numbers of Wigeon and Pintail around this morning. Pochard have started to arrive back, with 5 present today, and 2 Whooper Swans were on the Mere late vthis afternoon.

Raptors included an adult Peregrine, 3 Marsh Harriers, and at least 3 Common Buzzards, along with Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Wdaer counts received today included 300+ Lapwings, 50+ Snipe, at least 20 Ruff, and 8 Black-tailed Godwits.

2 Kingfishers were seen from the Ron Barker hide.

Other birds recorded today included the first Redwing of the year (flying over this morning), Little Egret briefly on the Mere, Goldcrest in Pines near the Raines hide, and a Chiffchaff near the sewage works.
