Little Ringed Plover
The first Little Ringed Plover of the year a presumed pair flew onto the back of the Mere early afternoon a week earlier that 2015. The first arrivals of this species in Lancashire is on average on the 19th March.
An obvious arrival of Blackcap with birds singing around the reserve today. Plenty of Chiffchaff and a few Willow Warbler scattered around the reserve too.
Apart from Little Ringed Plover waders included 40+ Avocet, 30+ Black-tailed Godwit, 20+ Lapwing, 20+ Oystercatcher, 10+ Ruff, 8 Redshank, 6 Common Snipe and Dunlin.
Two Marsh Harrier still present. We can expected a few on passage too. At least 6 Common Buzzard, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk today.
Five different Med Gulls today with one obvious new arrival.
Other sightings included small flocks of Meadow Pipit and Linnet. Two Raven over the reserve midday and a pair of Great-crested Grebes in front of the Harrier Hide. Still 16 flying Whooper Swan.
