Todays sightings

Zeiss Hide and South Finger

Great bird watching from here today. There were 36 Dunlin all in full summer plumage, The Black Tailed Godwit flock was at 52 and there were 33 Redshank and an adult Avocet and 4 fully fledged young (not from here) and a Green Sandpiper. There was the usual scattering of ducks including 42 Teal. The Bottom New Piece field is being dried out at the moment in preparation for hay making and the dropping water levels (best viewed from the Zeiss) are proving very attractive to waders with 4 Green Sandpipers, 2 Greenshank and 20 Lapwing. There were two Cranes concealed in the long grass here as well best viewed from the Kingfisher hide where 1 Kingfisher and Reed, Sedge, and Cettis Warblers were all on show.

South Lake

Struggling to keep water levels up here so rather drier than ideal. However there were 18 Redshank and 5 Oystercatcher and one of the wild Cranes (a bird called Sedge who has been here on and off for a whole year now). Lots of duckling broods around mainly Tufted Duck Shelduck and Mallard.

Rushy

Still great here, all 6 young Avocets and the 4 adults were seen this morning also 1 Green Sandpiper and the Oystercatcher family.

Holden Tower and walkway.

Pretty quiet here just one Green Sandpiper at the Robbie Garnett a Kingfisher flew past the Holden and there was a Great Crested Grebe on the Long Ground Pool.

Yesterdays Landrover Safaris

Rather quiet on the estuary with just a few Shelduck and Curlew, Up to 6 Little Egrets 12 Herons and 8 Buzzards. Lots of broods of ducklings including a Shoveler with 8 well grown youngsters. Common Terns and Great Crested and Little Grebes on the pools but the real highlights were the Dragon and Damselflies. Twelve species were seen including Emperor, Hairy Dragonfly and Broad Bodied Chaser. Scarce Chasers were seen earlier in the week and the second ever record of Golden Ringed Dragonfly. No Grass Snake this very hot weather gets the sheets of tin too hot for them.
