The Learning Team at WWT Arundel welcomes more than 4,500 children each year to take part in inspiring outdoor learning experiences. From school visits to the award-winning Generation Wild programme, thousands of young people from schools across West Sussex enjoy hands-on opportunities to explore nature and connect with wildlife.
Over recent years, the team has also been contacted by parents and carers who educate their children at home and were looking for opportunities to combine learning with outdoor exploration. In response to growing interest, WWT Arundel has again expanded its dedicated programme for home-educating families this autumn.
These special sessions are designed to bring children together to learn alongside others of a similar age while discovering the wonders of wetlands. Each session includes a full day's admission to WWT Arundel for one child and one accompanying adult, as well as two hours of structured group learning led by the centre's experienced Learning Team. Groups are kept small, with up to 14 children taking part in each session, helping to create an engaging and supportive learning environment.
The October session, Migrate Adventure, explores the incredible journeys made by migratory birds. Through an interactive game around the reserve, children will discover why birds migrate, the challenges they face along the way, and the remarkable distances some species travel each year.
In November, children can take part in Brilliant Birds, focused on the wetland birds that make WWT Arundel their home. Participants will learn to use binoculars and observe ducks, swans and geese while investigating the special adaptations that help them thrive in wetland habitats, from webbed feet that aid swimming to waterproof, oil-coated feathers that keep them warm and dry.
These home learning sessions offer a fantastic opportunity for children to learn outdoors, develop their understanding of wildlife and the natural world, and enjoy meeting other home-educated children in a unique and inspiring setting.
