Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Avocet Count

Windy with heavy showers early on and feeling cold. It's that time of year when you tend to feel sorry for the Sand Martins and Swallows that are now being seen daily on the reserve.

An excellent Avocet count again with 86 birds on the reserve. Other waders included 2 Dunlin, 40+ Oystercatcher, 40+ Black-tailed Godwit, 20+ Ruff, 2 Ringed Plover and 8+ Redshank.

An adult female Peregrine caused some commotion today. Also present but less noticeable in the windy conditions; Marsh Harrier, 5+ Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Male and female Siskin on the feeders from the Janet Kear Hide with Chaffinch, Greenfinch and Goldfinch.

At least 2 Med Gull on the Mere early on and later.

Pair of Red-legged Partridge opposite the reserve.
