Day No.3 for the Black-necked Grebe

Another misty 'rare' start to the day eventually breaking out into sunshine and a fresher feel. The 'long staying' Black-necked Grebe is still present showing well on the Mere.

Black-necked Grebe. Will it hang around for the bank holiday weekend?

A juvenile Wood Sandpiper was feeding on the back on Sunley's Marsh early morning and then (assuming it was the same bird) on the Mere mid morning. Greenshank again, 23 Ruff, 8 Black-tailed Godwit, 200 Lapwing, 4 Dunlin and 40+ Snipe.

Many Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler calling around the site. Still Sedge Warbler and Blackcap.

Raptors included Marsh Harrier, Peregrine (juv), 3 Kestrel, 3+ Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.

Teal numbers on the increase but no counts. Other wildfowl include; Gadwall, Shoveler, Mallard, Greylag, Canada Geese plus small numbers of Shelduck (juvs), Wigeon, Pochard and Tufted. Also present, a few injured Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swan.

We are getting close to receiving the first reports of Pink-footed Geese arriving into the area, although noticeable influxes don't usually occur until mid September on the back of North westerly winds and high pressure over Iceland.

Just to note that Harry Sharrock's funeral will take place on Thursday 7th September 10:45am at Preston Crematorium.
