Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Hen Harrier

The 'ringtail' Hen Harrier was present around the reserve again today, and was seen by several observers early afternoon. In another good raptor day, 2 Marsh Harriers, an immature Peregrine, at least 3 Common Buzzrads, a Sparrowhawk, and both of the regular Owls (Tawny and Barn were seen).

Avocet numbers continue to build, with about 50 on the Mere late morning. 70 or more Oystercatchers were also present, along with numbers of Ruff (perhaps about 50, but fairly mobile today due to raptor activity, so no accurate estimate was possible) and a Ringed Plover20160304_163806-1_resized
