The past few days have been ripe with wetland wildlife here on the reserve at Martin Mere.

On the main mere recently, 4 Grey Herons, 4 Gadwall, 10 Shelduck, 4 Shovelers, 4 Ruff, 6+ Swallows, 10 Tufted Ducks, 5+ Snipe, 20+ Lapwing and 50+ Mallard have been counted.

1 Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen from the Janet Kear hide today. Look out for both juvenile and adult birds as they feed from the bird feeding stations in front of the windows or as they climb vertically up the trees at the back and on each side of the pond.

Today from the Harrier hide, 250+ Greylag Geese, 3 Little Grebes, 1 Little Egret, 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls and 3 Cormorants were seen.

On the path leading up towards the Gordon Taylor hide today, 15 Starlings and 6 Linnets flew by. 8 Green Sandpipers, 7 Pied Wagtails, 2 Dunlin, 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 Wood Sandpiper and 3 Little Ringed Plovers (including 2 juveniles) have been observed from the Gordon Taylor hide recently feeding from the muddy ground and the pond water.

Further up along the path towards the Tomlinson hide, 1 Whitethroat, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Kestrels and 10 Stonechat were spotted today.

3 Whooper Swans and 5 Marsh Harriers were seen from the Ron Barker hide on Monday.
