Latest Sightings

The week so far has been bountiful with bird species here on the reserve at Martin Mere.
On Tuesday, 54 Stock Doves were seen on Woodend Marsh. 15 Ruff were seen from Harrier hide, as well as 54 Shoveler, 61 Teal, 1 Great Crested Grebe, and 16 Gadwall.
Recently on the main mere, 2 Sand Martins, 8 House Martins, around 60 Swallows, 18 Coot, 1 Common Sandpiper and 5 Starlings.
Down the path leading to Janet Kear hide, 3 Cetti's Warblers, 1 Goldcrest, 6 Long-Tailed Tits and 1 Chiffchaff were heard from the surrounding trees.
From the Harrier hide today, 2 Kingfishers, 1 Bittern, 1 Little Egret, 1 Marsh Harrier male, 8 Little Grebes, 2 Cormorants, 8 Black-Tailed Godwits and 6+ Tufted Ducks were observed. Nearby from the Reedbed walk, a group of around 15 Snipe was spotted flying over the footpath before disappearing into the reeds next to a pond.
Along the bank leading towards the Gordon Taylor hide, 1 Grey Heron and 4 Stonechat juveniles were seen. From the Gordon Taylor hide itself, 2 Green Sandpipers, 1 Sparrowhawk, and 15+ Pied Wagtails were present.
Ron Barker hide hosted 1 Bittern and 1 Buzzard and we had a surprise visit from a Peregrine on Wednesday.
