Latest Sightings
We've had a lot of waders begin to show up around the reserve recently. Woodend Marsh has been a popular area where 41 Avocets, 12 Ruff, 6 Redshanks and 1 Dunlin have been seen as well as 15 Golden Plovers. Ringed Plover have also begun to make their return as they prepare for the breeding season, 1 was seen from Gordon Taylor Hide and 1 was seen from Discovery Hide on the back of the Mere.
Furthermore on the Mere, 220 Black Tailed Godwits were seen along with 10 Cormorants, 7 Oystercatchers and 4 Mediterranean Gulls. Marsh Harriers can also be viewed regularly flying over the Mere on the hunt. Around Janet Kear Hide, Great Spotted Woodpecker can be heard drilling away as Long-tailed Tits, Goldcrest and Chiffchaff can also be heard and seen around this area. The leucistic Reed Bunting was sighted on Thursday at Janet Kear Hide on the feeders too.
At Harrier Hide, 2 Great Crested Grebe and 2 Little Grebe continue to be seen regularly. Over at Ron Barker Hide, Skylark are heard regularly singing away. 14 Cattle Egrets, 4 Marsh Harrier, 30 Teal and 10 Wigeon were also spotted from this hide. The Barn Owls can still be seen in the early hours, hunting in the fields.
