Latest Sightings
This week on the reserve at Martin Mere, two species last seen in 2025 - 1 Egyptian Goose and 2 Arctic Terns - were spotted on the mere for the first time this year. A Mediterranean Gull x Black-Headed Gull hybrid bird has been present on the mere this week as well. Other birds seen on the mere this week include 26 Gadwall, 3 Pink-Footed Geese, 4 Cormorants, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, 7 Common Terns, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Marsh Harriers (1 male, 1 female), 2 Stock Doves, and 4 Swifts.
Above the path leading to Harrier hide, 1 Hobby was observed being mobbed by 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls. 3 other Lesser Black-Backed Gulls were seen flying above the Reedbed Walk in a group along with these two.
From Harrier hide, 2 Great Crested Grebes were seen on the water along with 3 Tufted Duck pairs.
3 Blackcaps, 2 Little Grebes, 5+ Cetti's Warblers, 3 Chiffchaff, 3 Song Thrush, 5+ Sedge Warblers, 2 Willow Warblers, 1 Pochard male, 1 Sand Martin, 10+ Reed Warblers, and 1 Skylark were present at the Reedbed today. 1 Bittern was heard booming deep in the reeds.
On the path toward Gordon Taylor hide today, 2 Whitethroat, 8+ House Martins, and 1 Great White Egret were spotted. From the hide itself, 4 Common Gulls, 3 Mediterranean Gulls, 25 Avocets, 1 Dunlin, 1 Redshank, and 3 Oystercatchers were seen.
At Ron Barker hide today, 2+ Cattle Egrets were seen by our herd of English Longhorn Cattle. 2 Buzzards, 1 Kestrel, and 1 Red-Legged Partridge were present as well.
