It’s been a scorcher of a bank holiday weekend here at Martin Mere, but that hasn’t deterred activity on site. There continues to be sightings of Bittern flying over the reedbed with reports on both Saturday and Sunday. Another spot where they have frequently been seen over the last few days is Ron Barker hide. From this hide Cattle Egret, Great White Egret, Barn Owl and Marsh Harrier were also spotted on Saturday.

On the Mere, viewed from Discovery hide, you can expect to see Avocet, Common Tern, and Black-headed Gull, all of which are currently nesting on the mere islands. Additionally, one Whooper Swan, Gadwall (5), Oystercatcher (3), Shoveler (2), Lapwing (21) and Pink Footed Geese (2) have been seen on the mere over the weekend.

A Hobby was seen flying over Woodend Marsh on Saturday, viewed from either Rees, Gordon Taylor or Tomlinson hide. On the path towards the latter hide a Spotted Flycatcher was reported on the same afternoon. You may also see Mediterranean Gull on Woodend Marsh, as this is where they are breeding.
