Latest Sightings
The past few days here on the reserve at Martin Mere have been wonderful for wildlife sightings and a good day out.
On the mere, 20 Cattle Egrets, 5 Pink-Footed Geese, 2 Marsh Harriers, 7 Common Terns, 2 Teal, 1 Common Gull, 1 Kestrel female, 1 Buzzard, 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, 1 Ruff male, 1 Shelduck juvenile, and numerous House Martins and Swallows have been seen.
Along the path to Janet Kear hide, small groups of Long-Tailed Tit have been observed flitting through the dense trees on the search for arthropod prey. Blackcap and Treecreeper have also been frequently spotted and heard around this area. From Janet Kear hide itself, 1 Reed Warbler and 1 Reed Bunting were seen today, along with the usual Blue Tit, Great Tit, and Robin.
At Harrier hide today, 5 Great Crested Grebes were spotted, with the 2 adults observed fishing for prey to feed to their 3 zebra-striped offspring. Other birds seen at Harrier hide include 1 Little Egret, 6 Tufted Ducks, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 9 Cormorants, 8 Shovelers, 5+ Sand Martins, and 1 Little Grebe.
At Gordon Taylor hide today, 2 Stock Doves soared past. At Ron Barker hide, numerous Yellow Wagtails were observed on the Sunleys pond dirt, feeding on insects with our native Pied Wagtails (Subspecies yarrellii). Some of these Pied Wagtails have been of the European race (Ssp. alba), also known as the White Wagtail, which have a far lighter grey colour on their backs.
