Latest Sightings
The weather on the reserve, over the past few days, has taken a turn and has become much milder. However, this has not had an impact on our sightings with lots of species still being seen across the site.
Today, a Red Kite was seen briefly soaring with the Buzzards over the reserve before moving on. Also, over the weekend 11 Yellow Wagtail were seen feeding around the feet of our heard of Longhorn Cattle.
The Mere has been full of wader activity recently with a Wood Sandpiper remaining the highlight - the best views have been from the second screen along our Nature Trail! This has accompanied several Green Sandpipers, six Ruff, a Dunlin, and a Little Ringed Plover. Six Common Terns have been seen well over the Mere, along with 105 Black-tailed Godwits and an impressive 1130 Greylag Geese.
Over at Ron Barker, a juvenile Hobby has been stealing the show with some great views over the reserve along with 15 Cattle Egret in and among our Longhorn herd, and a Kingfisher showing well at the water’s edge. A few Marsh Harriers can be seen regularly from Ron Barker, with a couple of Sparrowhawks and a Kestrel making the occasional appearance over the weekend.
There has been plenty to look out for around the reserve over the past few days too with a charm of Goldfinches showing a nice aerial display along with five Great White Egrets scattered across our wetlands. Keep an eye out for a stunning Clouded Yellow butterfly too, which shines nicely in the sun and has been seen well towards the back of the Mere!
