The week so far on the reserve here at Martin Mere has brought plenty of wildlife highlights. 2 Golden Plover were heard and subsequently observed from Rees hide as they were flying over Woodend Marsh today. 

From the car park on Tuesday, 1 Jay, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Stock Doves, and 3 Mistle Thrush were seen.

On the mere this week, there were 3 Grey Heron, 1 Great White Egret, 4 Pink-Footed Geese, 2 Common Sandpipers, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Snipe, 1 Kestrel, 50 Sand Martins, 1 Linnet, 1 Peregrine, and 1 Common Gull present. A whopping 47 Cattle Egrets were also spotted from Discovery hide with our English Longhorn Cattle herd.

At Harrier hide, 22 Ruff, 45 Teal, 4 Little Grebe, 3 Great Crested Grebe, 20 Shovelers, 6 Wigeon (seasonal ducks that arrive for the Winter!), 6 Cormorants, 5 Gadwall, and 2 Cetti's Warblers were found today.

1 Hobby zoomed past United Utilities hide today in its search of swallows and dragonflies. Also seen from the hide were 4 Marsh Harriers, 3 Buzzards, and a large flock of Greylag Geese and Canada Geese
