We’ve had another fantastic week of autumn migration at Martin Mere, with Pink-footed Geese continuing to arrive from Iceland. Our resident seven Pink-footed Geese have now been joined by the first overnight roost on the Mere, with a group of 24 birds counted settling down for the night. During the day, 150+ Pink-footed Geese were seen in Plover Field, while an impressive flock of around 430 flew overhead from Ron Barker Hide. With autumn migration well underway, there’s plenty of reason to keep looking skywards!
There have been plenty of highlights across the Mere, including a Great White Egret, 46 Cattle Egrets, two Pintails and four Pochards. A Common Sandpiper and Snipe were also recorded, while around 40 Starlings, 15 Swallows and 12 House Martins added to the autumn activity.
Ron Barker Hide provided some fantastic birds of prey sightings, with a Peregrine, Kestrel, two Buzzards and two Marsh Harriers all seen hunting across the reserve. A Kingfisher and Little Grebe were also spotted, while an impressive 45 Swallows were recorded feeding overhead. Harrier Hide was also busy, with 30+ Gadwall, 10 Tufted Ducks, six Little Grebes and a Common Gull providing plenty to look out for.
Over at United Utilities Hide, two Yellow Wagtails and two Buzzards were seen, alongside another Marsh Harrier and Snipe. Keep an eye out while exploring the paths too, with a Treecreeper spotted between Janet Kear and Gladstone Hides.
