Café kitchen closure

From 8–17 September, our café kitchen will be closed for refurbishment. During this time, our front-of-house will remain open, offering a selection of cakes and ice cream, sandwiches, and drinks. You will also be able to visit our kiosks by the play areas.

Latest Sightings

A delayed up date on what's around on the reserve. A count of Pink-footed Geese over the weekend produced just over 9000 birds and a total of nearly 42000 in Lancashire as a whole. The Whooper Swan numbers decreased slightly to 957 with some birds moving on to Welney as new bird continue to arrive. The Whooper Swan normally peak at Martin Mere in December/January.

Plenty of hunting activity with 3 Marsh Harrier, 8+ Common Buzzard, 2 Peregrine, 2 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk. Three Raven were present feeding on carrion yesterday. Barn Owl regularly from the Ron Barker Hide late afternoon and on Sunday 2 Tawny Owl near the Kingfisher Hide.

Waders counts; ~1500 Lapwing, 30+ Ruff, 20+ Common Snipe, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, Golden Plover and Dunlin.

Other birds include 2 Kingfisher, 3+ Grey Wagtail, 4+ Stonechat.

It's possible to record over 60 species of bird around the reserve.
