Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Record Numbers

The record count for Pink-footed Geese at WWT Martin Mere was broken yesterday with 36600 birds on the reserve in the afternoon. It's quite possible that a greater number eventually came into roost. The previous record was 36000 from October 2010.

Huge numbers of geese are still present today and it's likely to be the case for the next week or so. The Mere is particularly impressive at the moment.

Pink-foot Blizzard (Andy Bunting)

Interesting arrivals included this pair of juvenile leucistic Pink-footed Geese. The lack of dark pigment giving them a ghostly pallor.

Plenty of other birds to see but we'll update those tomorrow.
