Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Another frosty start to the day which ended in a on going thaw.

The Mere was packed with 13 species of wildfowl with large flocks of Wigeon roosting on the ice. Nice views of Pintail in close and a few Gadwall present on the open water.

Two new additions to the Martin Mere year list with a pair of Yellowhammer feeding next to the perimeter fench and Chiffchaff feeding in brambles near the Kingfisher Hide.

Raptors included Merlin, Marsh Harrier, Kestrel, Buzzard and Sparrowhawk. Barn Owl and Tawny seen again.
