Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December

Some of our birds will be off display on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December, while vets carry out some routine health checks. If you would still like to visit us on these days, admission tickets will only be available on arrival and will be reduced to £10 an adult and £5 a child.

The weekend

A compilation of the weekend's sightings. Common Sandpiper, new in, from the Harrier Hide. At least one Green Sandpiper from the Hale. Other waders included 31 Avocet with 2 chicks, 50+ Lapwing, 4 Oystercatcher, 6+ Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Ringed Plover, Ruff and 4+ Redshank.

Raptors; female Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, 3+ Common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

Over 100 Common Swift feeding on the reserve.

Lots of young Tree Sparrow, Goldfinch and Greenfinch near the feeding stations. Great Spotted Woodpeckers showing from the Janet Kear Hide.

The Mere is fairly lively with fledgling Black-headed Gulls calling all over.

The first Painted Lady Butterfly of the year seen yesterday. Bee Orchids at the start of the upper path to the Harrier Hide.
