Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Little Gull

Just a brief update. See previous sightings for a fuller picture.

A Little Gull flew through mid morning new for the year. We usually get non adult birds hanging around on the reserve into early summer.

The first Whimbrel of the year was seen late on Saturday. These birds stage in Lancashire before heading further North to breed. Two Whimbrel from the Ron Barker Hide late afternoon today.

A few Wheatear were seen yesterday from the Ron Barker Hide, a slow year for these passage migrants.

Grey and Red-legged Partridge seen from the Ron Barker Hide again.

A few House Martin moving yesterday.

At least one pair of Mediterranean Gull present yesterday.

Bittern booming heard from the Harrier Hide.

Marsh Harrier (female type) seen today.

That's more like it! Even the Med Gulls won't complain about the forecast
