Don't Let the Rain Stop Play

On a soggy or sunny day, we've got you covered this spring and summer!

Don’t let rain stop play! Here at WWT Slimbridge we love all kinds of wet weather, from downpours to drizzle - because without it, where would wetlands be?

There are so many things to do on rainy days to keep the busiest of minds occupied, whatever your age. Just pull on your wellies, pop up an umbrella or even lift your eyes to the skies and embrace it because after all, it’s just a ‘bit’ of rain!

Flamingo in the rain

When it’s raining our feathered friends tend to get on with things, so birdwatching in the rain is no problem. But if you want a break from the weather you can retreat into one of our hides, which provide the perfect place to watch what’s going on outside while staying dry and still experiencing the wonder of wetlands.

We have plenty of activities for a fun day out, and rainy days won’t stop that. Escape the everyday and immerse yourself in nature, from sheltering in our Back from the Brink tunnel and spotting the smallest of harvest mice to watching our fabulous flocks of flamingo from the shelter of the Flamingo Lagoon hide. And toddlers won't even notice the rain as they splodge through puddles and streams in Welly Boot Land. Tired of the outdoors? No problem. Meet the watery wonders of Toad Hall, including real life axolotls! Followed by burning off energy in soft play of course. Whatever the weather, WWT Slimbridge is a great place for a day out in Gloucestershire, don't just take our word for it, we recently won Large Visitor Attraction of the Year in the 2024 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

If the sun does decide to shine, why not explore our one kilometre Canoe Safari trail and see our wetlands from a whole new view. Sit back and relax as you glide along the waterways in search of dragonflies, ducklings, kingfishers and even water voles! Or if you're really feeling adventurous why not head out into the wild of our reserve by 4x4, on a Wild Safari, in search of grass snakes, crane (once extinct in the UK!) and birds of prey. This 90 minute experience will show you parts of WWT Slimbridge you've never encountered before. Splash through ditches, trundle along the sea wall and take in the breath taking views of the Severn estuary along your journey. It's a seasonal highlight not to be missed!

When you've completed your wetland adventures, swing by the Kingfisher Kitchen, or refuel at one of our kiosks. Warm up with a hot chocolate or cool down with an ice cream, because whatever the weather - there’s always time for sweet seasonal treats! Our new Estuary Shoreline event space even provides the perfect undercover spot to enjoy your refreshments, all whilst watching the wetlands go by.
