Home Educator Event: Sustainability Challenge

Sessions:

10.30am – 11.30am: session and activities in South Lake Education Hut - suitable for ages 3-7

11.45am – 12.45pm: session and activities in South Lake Education Hut - suitable for ages 7-11 

2pm – 3.30pm: session and activities in South Lake Education Hut - suitable for age 12+

Itinerary for ages 3-7 & 7-11:

During this session we will take a look at the water cycle and the role wetlands play within it. We will investigate who and what benefits from this natural system and how might we affect it.

Activities include: 

  • Completing a water cycle
  • Identifying pond creatures using WWT id guides
  • Taking part in a bioblitz to discover and identify wetland plants and minibeasts
  • Birdwatching from the South Lake Discovery hide 
  • Thinking about threats such as plastic pollution and what affect these have on wetlands

Please meet at the Education Hut 5 minutes before the start time of your session.


 Itinerary for age 12+:

Start the session with our Head of Sustainability to hear about the role she holds at WWT and objectives she has achieved/holds for the future.

Activities will be based on the following themes:

  • Plastic and its alternatives
  • Waste and the law
  • Reducing our carbon footprint

We will finish with a tour of one of our reedbeds and our Biomass boiler to learn about the roles they play in helping us achieve our sustainability related objectives.

Please meet at the Education Hut 5 minutes before the start time of your session.


Whilst exploring before or after your session, take on the challenge to complete an Eco audit of the centre and/or join in with our daily what's on suite of talks and activities. Between 2:00pm & 3.30pm we will be offering a drop-in make and take session with an eco-friendly theme in the Pond Zone. Come and create a bug hotel out of natural materials or turn a whisk into the perfect nesting material pantry for garden birds, plus much more. Ticketing

Admission, session and activities: £8.20 per child

One adult per family: free

Additional adults: £13.35 each.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept WWT membership, Boundless or Blue Peter badges on learning visits.

All sessions meet at the Education Hut near South Lake. Please arrive at the meeting point 5 minutes before the start time of your session.
