First Bewick's Swan of 2014
A single Bewick's Swan was present throughout the day on the Mere with 1000+ Whooper Swan. There have only been 6 Bewick's present in the area this winter. All the evidence suggest that climate change is responsible for the decline of this species wintering in the UK.
An adult non-breeding plumage Mediterranean Gull joined 1000+ Black-headed Gulls on the Mere, also present 2 Great Black-backed Gull.
Over 1000 Lapwing, 40+ Ruff and 10 Black-tailed Godwit.
Raptors included 2 Peregrine, 3 Common Buzzard and Sparrowhawk.
A few wildfowl counts included 40+ Pochard and 20 Tufted Duck. Big numbers of Wigeon, Teal and Pintail on the reserve.
Fieldfare and Redwing feeding in the overflow car park.
Two Treecreeper and Great-spotted Woodpecker along the Nature Trail. Also present 20+ Tree Sparrow.
