More Birds

Another good selection around the reserve even if the conditions for viewing were not ideal with many species keeping their heads down in the wind. Having said that a number of species counts were up probably as a result of birds moving in from the coast for more shelter.

Highest count of Pink-footed Geese of the autumn so far with 430 birds also another increase in feral geese with 600 Greylag and 320 Canada. Other wildfowl counts included 300+ Teal, 45 Wigeon, 34 Shoveler, 22 Gadwall, 15 Pintail, 7 Pochard and 4 Shelduck. A imm/female Garganey was present on the Mere this morning.

Waders counts included Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, 5 Dunlin, 2 Redshank, 58 Ruff, 10+ Snipe, and 300+ Lapwing.

Four Marsh Harrier, 2+ Common Buzzard, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Three Peregrines late afternoon.

Other counts included 60+ Stock Dove, 25 Cormorant, 200+ Black-headed Gull and a Kingfisher.
