Café kitchen closure

From 8–17 September, our café kitchen will be closed for refurbishment. During this time, our front-of-house will remain open, offering a selection of cakes and ice cream, sandwiches, and drinks. You will also be able to visit our kiosks by the play areas.

Bewick's Swans

A group of 4 adult Bewick's Swans on the Mere this afternoon was the highlight of the day before flying off at 15.34, these are the first records this winter of this increasingly rare Russian visitor. Also at the afternoon feed were c120 Whooper Swans.

Other sightings include the drake Green-winged Teal still present from Ron Barker Hide today, also up to 3 Water Rails have been showing on and off from here of late. The usual Kingfisher is also still being seen from here.

1 or 2 Brambling and Siskin were heard flying over the site on Thursday morning. Goldeneye have been regular on the Mere most days with 4 (2 male, 2 fem) this morning, also 23 Pochard and a good count of 42 Tufted Duck from Harrier Hide on Thursday.

At least 20-30 Snipe can be seen at the moment with up to 10+ Black-tailed Godwit most days.

A Chiffchaff was seen in the collection area on Thursday along with a few Goldcrest and Long-tailed Tit. Great Spotted Woodpeckers have been seen and heard near the Janet Kear feeding station.
