First Whooper Swans

Coming on the back of the influx of Pink-footed Geese, which continued today, a group of 11 Whooper Swan that flew in at the Ron Barker Hide this morning were first for the autumn. Fairly early for Whooper Swan, generally we wouldn't expect big numbers of these until mid October onward.

Raptors included 2 Peregrine, 3 Marsh Harrier, 10+ Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel.

A Spotted Redshank was new in spending most of the afternoon on the Mere. At least 400 Lapwing, 10+ Ruff, 20+ Snipe.

Good numbers of Skylark passing over in the last couple of days.

It should be possible to see over 60 species in a full days bird watching at Martin Mere. If you would like to know the best spots, up to date info or to report any sightings then please call in at the in focus shop next to the Discovery Hide.
