Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

Five Marsh Harrier

Some excellent viewing of up to 5 Marsh Harrier today particularly but not exclusively from the United Utilities Hide. At least 10 Common Buzzard, 2 Kestrel and 2 Sparrowhawk.

Two Greenshank dropped in and flew out mid-morning viewed from the Ron Barker Hide. The usual Lapwing, Ruff and Common Snipe scattered around the reserve.

Now 50 Whooper Swan mostly feeding on waste potatoes on Top Mere. Fifteen Common Shelduck around the Mere. No counts but 20000+ Pink-footed Geese, the largest numbers being seen mid afternoon onwards.

Two Little Egret early on. Wheatear, Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher from the Ron Barker Hide.

Its currently possible to see 60+ species around the reserve.
