Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December

Some of our birds will be off display on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December, while vets carry out some routine health checks. If you would still like to visit us on these days, admission tickets will only be available on arrival and will be reduced to £10 an adult and £5 a child.

The number of overwintering waterfowl today was 667 Whooper Swans and 1293 Pink-Footed Geese.

You can witness the beautiful Whooper Swans from the Discovery Hide and watch them feeding every day at 3pm, alongside Pintail, Shelduck, Wigeon, Mute Swans, Coots, Mallards and Greylag Geese.

During the day, the Pink-Footed Geese move around in great numbers, and land on the fields behind the Mere alongside Canada Geese.

135 Black-Tailed Godwits, 55 Oystercatchers, and 29 Ruff were counted this week. The flock of Lapwing create a spectacle as they fly above the Mere, and you will also see Cormorants fishing.

2 Avocet were spotted on the Mere earlier this week and 1 Great White Egret was seen today. 15 Snipe were observed from the viewing platforms.

2 Redwing were sighted near the Bird Observatory, where visitors can find out more about recent sightings and learn about how we manage the reserve (open 11am-1pm).

1 Fieldfare was perched on a fence post at Ron Barker hide, where you can often see Marsh Harrier.

At Janet Kear hide, 1 Jay, 1 Little Egret, 1 Treecreeper and 1 Reed Bunting were sighted. There are always songbirds to be seen on the feeders, such as Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Long-Tailed Tits.

6 Tufted Ducks and 20 Pochard were observed at Harrier Hide, overlooking the Reedbeds where you may venture to discover elusive species like Water Rail.

On Woodend Marsh, 3 Ringed Plovers were spotted today from Rees hide. 5 Redwing, 2 Stonechat and 1 Barn Owl were seen from Tomlinson hide.
