Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

The week so far has been sunny and calm, and the reserve here at Martin Mere has yielded a wide array of bird species.

1 Song Thrush and 2 Tawny Owl juveniles have been seen today and on Wednesday in the trees along the nature trail.

On the main mere recently, 50 Lapwing, 2 Tufted Ducks, 12 Shelduck (along with 2 ducklings), 2 Stock Doves, 3 Common Terns, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Grey Heron, 10 Greylag Geese and 2 Marsh Harriers were spotted. Great Spotted Woodpeckers have also been seen from Janet Kear hide.

From Tomlinson hide, 2 Ruff and 3 Avocets were present. Little Grebe, Bullfinch, Linnet and juvenile Whitethroat were also observed on site on Tuesday. On the opposite end of the reserve, 5 Whooper Swans can be found grazing in the surrounding fields. Cattle Egrets can also be seen in these fields walking along the ground next to our English longhorn cattle. These mostly insectivorous egrets can often be seen riding on the cattles' backs on the hunt for flies.
