Latest Sightings

The reserve here at Martin Mere has been bountiful with many bird species seen this week.
1 Black-Necked Grebe juvenile, which had arrived on Sunday, is still present on the main mere. Look out for a small, dark grey bird bobbing up and down on the surface of the water with its head often submerged as it scans for its underwater prey, which it will dive to catch.
Other bird species that were seen on the main mere this week include 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Mute Swans, 10 Shelduck, 1 Redshank, 3 Teal, 1 Tufted Duck, 10+ House Martins and 4 Gadwall.
1 Nuthatch was spotted taking advantage of the bird feeders in front of Janet Kear hide today.
In the Reedbed area, 1 Little Egret was observed fishing for its waterborne prey. Nearby from the Harrier hide, 4 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Cormorants, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Herring Gulls, 3 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls and 4 Pochard were spotted in the water.
1 Snipe, 3 Green Sandpipers, 4 Avocets (with 2 juveniles), 4 Ruff, 3 Kestrels, 200+ Lapwings, 2 Grey Wagtail juveniles and 1 Sedge Warbler were seen from the Gordon Taylor hide recently.
4 Marsh Harriers - a family group consisting of 1 adult male, 1 adult female and 2 juveniles - were seen from the Ron Barker hide today.
