Latest Sightings

The week so far has been rich with bird life here on the reserve at Martin Mere.
On Tuesday, 6 Grey Herons were seen on the main mere. 29 Cattle Egrets were counted on Wednesday as they were flushed from the top of the mere in an attempt to avoid a potential predator. Today, 5 Snipe, 1 Ruff, 6 Teal, 2 Pochard, 5 Stock Doves, 5 Shovelers, and 2 Hobbies were counted on the main mere, along with 1 White-Cheeked Pintail, which has been present on site for 2 weeks now and likely escaped from a captive collection.
1 Chiffchaff was seen from the Janet Kear hide today. Further up the path, from the Harrier hide, a small group of Black-Tailed Godwit were observed, alongside 1 Little Grebe, 2 Green Sandpipers, 10+ Swallows, 1 Little Egret, 4 Cormorants, 5 Starlings, 4 Tufted Ducks, and 150+ Greylag Geese.
1 Buzzard was spotted in the distance from the United Utilities hide today.
Along the path to Gordon Taylor hide, 1 Cetti's Warbler was heard calling. Other birds identified from along the path today include 1 Herring Gull and 1 Kestrel male.
2 Green Sandpipers, 2 Ringed Plovers, 8 Pied Wagtail, and 1 Sparrowhawk were observed from the Gordon Taylor hide today. 1 Bittern was seen in flight from along the reedbed walk path.
From the path towards the Tomlinson hide, a number of Stonechat were spotted.
1 Kingfisher was seen from the Ron Barker hide this morning.
