It’s been busy this week at Martin Mere, with many species on the move. 13 Yellow wagtails and a Wheatear were spotted by our team on Friday, with a further 8 Yellow wagtails being reported on Sunday. The back of Tomlinson hide, overlooking the reserve seems to be the ideal place to see them. Alternatively, from the United Utilities hide overlooking Plover field.

Over at Ron Barker Sunday seemed to be a perfect day for watching raptors, as a Barn owl, Red kite, Marsh Harrier and Osprey were reported over the course of the day. The latter will be shortly undertaking it’s migration and as such now is a good time to look out for them flying over site. Ron Barker also provides a great view of other species such as Little Ringed Plover (2), Cattle Egret (20), Snipe (3) and of course Kingfisher (2) which have been showing really well at the moment.

Although we will shortly be saying goodbye to our summer visitors such as Swallows, we have started to welcome back our winter migrants. Over at Ron Barker 12 Pink footed geese were reported, while 10 were spotted on the mere. These birds migrate from the breeding grounds in Greenland and Iceland and spend most of autumn and winter with us, look out for them in the following weeks as they start to arrive.

Over at Harrier Hide there has been a lot of activity. More than 250 Greylag and 150 Canada Geese can be seen from this hide. Further to this Harrier hide provides an excellent view of Teal (49), Shoveler (24), Gadwall (37), Lapwing (100) and Ruff (12). If that isn’t exciting enough, Green Sandpiper was reported at Harrier hide on Friday.
