Canoe and Boat Safari closure

Due to the predicted high winds and rain this weekend we have made the decision to keep our canoe safari and boat tours closed for the safety of our visitors. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

The week so far has been teeming with wildlife here on the reserve at Martin Mere.

2155 Pink-Foooted Geese were counted in the fields on the back of the main mere on Tuesday. Other birds seen on the main mere this week include 2 Glossy Ibis (which have also been seen from the Ron Barker, Gordon Taylor and United Utilities hides), 2 Mute Swans, 11 Cormorants, 4 Pochard, 5 Shelduck, 85+ Pintail, 2 Marsh Harriers and 30+ Wigeon

Along the path leading towards Janet Kear, 1 Goldcrest, 1 Kingfisher and 2 Long-Tailed Tits were seen today. Another kingfisher was heard calling from the Harrier hide, from which 4 Snipe, 19 Ruff, 8 Tufted Ducks, 14 Gadwall and 242 Teal were also seen. 

1 Great White Egret was seen from United Utilities hide today, where 1 Peregrine juvenile was also spotted.

Along the path towards Gordon Taylor hide, 2 Kestrels and 6 Linnets were seen flying overhead, whilst 2 Grey Wagtails were observed flying down the sluice stream. 

20 Cattle Egrets were observed eating insects on the ground and on the backs of our English Longhorn Cattle at Gordon Taylor hide today. Further up the path toward Tomlinson hide, 8 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Pied Wagtails and 2 Skylarks were observed flying toward the Sewage Works hedgerows.
