Hide closure: Sunday 9 November

No access to Ron Barker, Hale and Mere View Hides
Unfortunately, we have had a recent case of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, in our collection birds. To prevent further spread of the disease, we are putting in place some additional protection measures, which includes testing the birds in our duckery. To allow our teams the time and space to do this, we’ve temporarily closed this part of the wetland reserve and will reopen on Monday 10 November.

A highlight sighting from this past weekend was a single Otter, seen from Ron Barker Hide. This hide is still reliably one of the best places to spot Marsh Harrier coming to roost in the late afternoons. It has also been a common spot for Water Rail over recent days, one seen on Sunday.

Thrush migration is well underway and Redwing, Fieldfare, Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush are regularly seen daily. This morning a female Sparrowhawk flew over Raine's Hide as heavy rain set in. It is certainly feeling very autumnal across the reserve.

A male Brambling was noted from Tomlinson Hide on Saturday. The herd of cattle in Woodend Marsh were recently moved to the outer reserve, producing a count of 40 Cattle Egret. Woodend Marsh, easily viewable from Gordon Taylor and Tomlinson Hide, is still one of the best places to see the growing number of Whooper Swan visiting Martin Mere, 100+ gathered there this Monday morning.
