Latest Sightings
The past few days here at Martin Mere have been filled with interesting wildlife.
First of all, the male Ring-necked Duck which first appeared last weekend has continued to show in front of the Discovery Hide – it was last seen on Wednesday, although the birds on the Mere are always worth looking through, as it is likely to still be in the area. 480 Lapwing have been counted on the Mere, along with 58 Pochard and 530 Teal.
A Short-eared Owl was seen on Thursday over Dry Patch, one of the outer fields on the Reserve. This would be best viewed from the United Utilities hide. Other highlights from this hide include the Cattle Egrets, which continue to feed both with the Cattle and on Langley’s Field, as well as Barn Owl and Marsh Harrier.
Up at the Ron Barker hide, Kingfisher, Barn Owl and Great Egret continue to be seen, as well as Marsh Harrier, which are usually seen hunting at the back of Sunley’s Marsh.
Cetti’s Warbler and Water Rail continue to be heard on the Reedbed, which remains the best site for viewing Gadwall – best seen from the Harrier Hide. Fieldfare have been showing well in the trees behind the Duckery (behind Hale Hide).
