It’s been a Christmas cracker at Martin Mere this week. On Christmas eve both a Barn Owl and Short-Eared Owl were reported from United Utilities hide. While over on Woodend Marsh, the Glossy Ibis was showing well, with the Gordon Taylor hide providing the best view. From this hide you can also expect to see Teal, Wigeon and Shoveler.
On the path between this hide and Tomlinson, you may see some of our English Longhorn Cattle overwintering in a field. Here you will also find Cattle Egrets, which can often be seen with our cows.
Elsewhere, a drake Ring-Necked Duck continues to frequent the mere and is best viewed from Discovery hide. He can often be seen associating with Tufted Duck. While Whooper Swans, Shelduck, Pochard, Pintail, Mallard, Lapwing, Ruff and Black-Tailed Godwit are also visible from this hide, with 110 of the latter counted on Christmas morning.
On the same morning, one of our members of staff was treated to an early present, as he spied two Russian White-Fronted Geese amongst a mixed gaggle, looking out from Ron Barker hide.
