Latest Sightings
It has been a cold week here at Martin Mere, however that has not discouraged birds across the site. On the mere the drake Ring-Necked Duck is still present and is often seen amongst Tufted Ducks and Mallard. Discovery hide provides the best view, whilst also visible from this hide are Pochard, Shelduck, Wigeon, Pintail and Whooper Swans. In terms of waders, look out for Ruff and Black-Tailed Godwits, which can often be seen on the beach outside this hide.
A female Goosander was seen yesterday at Harrier hide. Over at Gordon Taylor a Water Rail was visible, expect to see Teal and Shoveler from this hide also. The Short-Eared Owl is still active over our reserve fields and is best seen from Tomlinson hide. We have a number of Barn Owls across the site and they are often reported from Tomlinson, United Utilities and Ron Barker.
Also reported from Ron Barker this week were Kingfisher, Great White Egret and Little Egret.
The Glossy Ibis has been less active in the cold weather, however it was seen flying over the reedbed on Tuesday morning.
