It’s been a week of ever changing weather here at Martin Mere but we have still had some exciting birds!
Notably on the Mere, we’ve had three Oystercatchers spotted, marking the start of an early return inland ahead of their breeding season in early Spring. The Ring-necked Duck is becoming a bit of a regular on the Mere, still seen well close to Discovery hide. Good numbers of Ruff, Black-tailed Godwits, and Pochard are still present too. Four Roe Deer were seen this morning at the back of the Mere including a young buck with its antlers coming through!
Over at Gordon Taylor, the Glossy Ibis has remained settled despite the wintery weather, and has been spotted on several occasions. Roughly 210 Teal were also seen on the Marsh along with a good number of Shovelers.
Ron Barker has continued to delight with a Merlin seen low over the fields a few days ago around lunchtime. The Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl have remained active over the marsh, along with a sweep of egrets including Cattle Egrets, a Little Egret, and a Great Egret. Other highlights include a Kingfisher, two Water Rail, and a Raven over the back fields.
Another nice sighting was a Peregrine seen hunting from United Utilities hide.
