The weather remains unpredictable here at Martin Mere, however that hasn’t deterred the birds. Over the weekend 245 Black-Tailed Godwits were seen from Ron Barker hide. Also reported at this hide was the Glossy Ibis, 15 Cattle Egret, 1 Grey Heron and 2 Avocets.

While Avocets are sometimes seen from Ron Barker, the best place to see them is over at Woodend Marsh, best viewed from either Rees, Tomlinson or Gordon Taylor hide. 36 were seen on Saturday, as well as Redshank (2), Gadwall (11), Shoveler (30), Pintail (10) and Mediterranean Gull (2).

Mediterranean Gulls can also be seen on the mere, viewed from Discovery hide. From this hide you can also expect to see other Gull species such as Black Headed Gulls, Greater Black-Backed Gull and Lesser Black-Backed Gull. Also present on the mere over the weekend were Oystercatchers (15), Tufted Ducks (4), Wigeon (25) and Shoveler (74). Outside this hide, the first Swallow of the year was seen on the same afternoon. However, as the weather is proving, one swallow does not make a summer!
